ISRAEL, PALESTINE AND JORDAN (2019/2020)

In the winter of 2019/2020, I had the invaluable opportunity to conduct fieldwork across Israel, Palestine and Jordan. My objective was to meticulously study the epigraphical collections within these regions, with a specific focus on uncovering consular-dated late Roman specimens.

My journey took me through a series of historically rich locations including Jerusalem, Ramallah, Jericho, Beit She’an (Scythopolis), Tiberias and Caesarea in Israel/Palestine, as well as Amman, Madaba, Petra, Beit Ras, Irbid and Gadara (Umm Qais) in Jordan. This period of research was marked by an extensive examination of artefacts and inscriptions that hold the potential to shed new light on the late Roman period.

The expedition allowed for the exploration of various sites and museums, each offering unique insights into the historical and cultural fabric of the areas visited. The affiliations with the Kenyon Institute in Jerusalem and the British School in Amman, two of the British Institutes funded by the British Academy, provided a solid foundation for this scholarly venture, facilitating access to resources and networks essential for the success of the fieldwork.

The exploration of these regions was not just an academic pursuit but also a journey through time, connecting with the past in a profound and tangible manner. Reflecting on this experience, I am deeply appreciative of the support and opportunities that made this research possible. Engaging with the rich archaeological and historical landscapes of Israel, Palestine, and Jordan has been a pivotal moment in my academic career, enriching my research with invaluable data and experiences.
