TURKEY 2021

From September to November 2021, I embarked on my second “BIRI fieldwork” expedition project in Turkey. While the first phase of this project was focused on the Levantine regions, this period of intensive research was dedicated to surveying the epigraphical collections across the Black Sea region and central Anatolia, with particular attention to the areas of Yozgat, Çorum, Amasya, Sinop, Pompeiopolis and Heraclea Pontica (Karadeniz Ereğli).

My primary objective was to uncover newly consular-dated late Roman inscriptions, to include in the DataCons Project and in my PhD work on consular dating. Being based at the British Institute at Ankara provided an invaluable foundation for this research. The Institute’s resources and its network of scholars and professionals were instrumental in navigating the challenges of fieldwork and in enriching the overall research experience. The opportunity to work within such a supportive and stimulating environment was a privilege that greatly enhanced the productivity and outcomes of my fieldwork.
